So in all, A View to a Kill is another missed opportunity to have a classic film with a classic villain. In other words, not enough care is given to them in the script to make us feel sympathy for them when everything hits the fan. Unfortunately, none of the women or even men that Bond gets help from prove to be of any relevance. On the other hand, at least they attempted to change up the villain formula from past installments, but Walken's performance never takes off.Ī strong point for the series often includes strong supporting characters. The problem is, this happens half way through the film, so the first hour or so just seems like an entirely different film. The twist on his character was welcomed and it definitely made more sense as to why 007 would be assigned to this case. Walken plays a horse breeder, yes Bond goes after a horse breeder. Speaking of the opening credits, this film contains one of the better credits songs and the score for the entire film is great. Only that this time Bond gets away on a snowboard, how original. It doesn't help that the first action scene we see is before the opening credits and it's yet another ski chase. But the film is poorly paced with an incredibly slow first half. The action definitely feels bigger, and there are a few notable action scenes that I can see myself re-watching. It's also unfortunate that we have a wasted performance from Christopher Walken, who very well could have been an all time great villain. Bond films attempt to go bigger and bigger with every release, but A View to a Kill fails at bringing a more mainstream approach to the series. Films have come along way since he began in 1973, but the quality has varied in this franchise. It's unfortunate because this film ends Roger Moore's long 15 year run as everyone's favorite British Secret Service agent. The 80's produced several all-time great action films, but A View to a Kill is not one of them. At this troubling juncture, Jones' character name, Mayday, seems symptomatic of the franchise in general. Indeed, the final San Francisco Bay Bridge action set piece offers the most excitement of the entire flick. When a slow-moving blimp is the literal 'vehicle' that sets your supposedly explosive climax in motion, you know it's time to hang up your Walther PPK. In this PG-rated spy adventure, an investigation of a horse-racing scam leads 007 (Moore) to a mad industrialist who plans to create a worldwide microchip monopoly by destroying California's Silicon Valley. Low energy as he goes through the all-too-familiar paces of redundancy, his now-lackluster 007 fails to throw off sparks even with a villainous two-fer played by Christopher Walken and Grace Jones. In his 7th outing as Bond, Moore's superspy has become Perry Como with a License to Kill. Thanks to A View to a Kill, Sean Connery didn't suffer the indignity of being the only Bond to go out on a low note. Trading adventure in for bad jokes, this rote outing marks an embarrassing entry for the series. Well past his sell-by date, Roger Moore shamelessly headlines an overly camp adventure where the only action comes courtesy of a killer theme song. If this film represents anything, it's that we're not nearly as bad as a society toward women as we once were. Or to suggest sexual activity on one's names. Like a woman would to be subservient to a man. Bond says, "Of course you are." Get it?! Her name is Jenny Flex, like the word "genuflect," which means to bow down in front of someone. There is a gal named Jenny Flex in the film. It's not that post-industrial society stopped being misogynistic or sexist, it's just that it could never be as blatant as all this is. Another problem is the misogyny and sexism itself. It's not that he is such a bad guy but it's just so terribly obvious that he is not the kind of man that women would be throwing themselves at like this film portrays. Roger Moore is just too old to be playing Bond at this point. Some entertainment just doesn't stand the test of time, including the 1985 James Bond film "A View to a Kill." Problems galore with this film. (For what it’s worth, according to survey data, people of all ages seem to agree that online dating leaves a lot to be desired.)īut apps, for all their frustrations, can also be hugely helpful: They provide a way for seniors to meet fellow singles even when their peers are all coupled up. He and others I talked with were tired of the whole process-of putting themselves out there again and again, just to find that most people are not a match. Al Rosen, a 67-year-old computer engineer living in Long Island, described sending out so many dating-app messages that he had to start keeping notecards with details about each person (likes concerts, enjoys going to wineries) so that he didn’t mix them up on phone calls. In fact, many gay bars have become something else entirely-more of a general social space, as younger gay people have turned to Grindr and other apps for hookups and dates.ĭating apps can be overwhelming for some older adults-or just exhausting. “They were sending me all white men,” she said.īill Gross, a program manager at SAGE-an organization for older LGBTQ adults-told me that the spaces that used to serve the gay community as meeting places for potential partners, such as gay bars, now don’t always feel welcoming to older adults. “And men who aren’t people of color are not that attracted to black women.” She recently stopped using one dating site for this reason. “There aren’t that many black men in my age group that are available,” she explained. The only way she can seem to find a date is through an app, but even then, McNeil told me, dating online later in life, and as a black woman, has been terrible. Now her friends don’t seem to have anyone to recommend for her, and she senses that it’s no longer acceptable to approach strangers. “So many wonderful dates.” She met her former husband when she went to brunch by herself and saw him reading a newspaper she asked whether she could share it. “I went on so many blind dates,” she said, reminiscing about her 20s and 30s. Wendy McNeil, a 64-year-old divorcée who works in fundraising, told me that she misses the old kind of dating, when she’d happen upon cute strangers in public places or get paired up by friends and colleagues. Getting back out there can be difficult, though. Read: Why it’s so hard for young people to date offline “Some people might not have thought about repartnering,” notes Linda Waite, a sociologist at the University of Chicago. But that longer lifespan also means that older adults, more than ever before, have years ahead of them to spark new relationships. And as people are living longer, the divorce rate for those 50 or older is rising. Throughout their adult life, their generation has had higher rates of separation and divorce, and lower rates of marriage in the first place, than the generations that preceded them. She’s in good company: More than one-third of Baby Boomers aren’t currently married. “You’re thrust out into this cyberworld after the refuge of being in a marriage that-even if it wasn’t wonderful-was the norm. She tried to use dating apps, but the experience felt bizarre and daunting. Her marriage of 33 years had recently ended, and she didn’t know any single men her age in Longview, Texas, where she lives. When Rhonda Lynn Way was in her 50s and on the dating scene for the first time since she was 21, she had no idea where to start. Stages 1 and 2 have the lowest arousal threshold. This stage can be described as light sleep and provides rest for the muscles and brain. Stage 2 sleep is where approximately 50% of total sleep time is spent. Stage 1 sleep is known as the transitional phase, where the patient is transitioning from wakefulness to sleep. Individuals experience four to six NREM-REM cycles a night, with each cycle lasting between 70 and 120 minutes. Normal sleep is made up of two alternating stages, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and 13 Insomnia differs from sleep deprivation by not being defined by a specific sleep amount individuals have difficulty sleeping despite having ample opportunity to sleep. 12,13 This sleep difficulty occurs at least 3 nights per week and is present for at least 3 months despite adequate opportunity to sleep. 1 The condition is characterized by chronic dissatisfaction with sleep quantity or quality that is associated with difficulty falling asleep, frequent nighttime awakenings with difficulty returning to sleep, and/or awakening earlier in the morning than desired, resulting in some form of daytime impairment, such as daytime sleepiness, impairment in functioning, and/or mood disturbances. 10,11 Insomnia accounts for more than five million physician office visits and 60 million prescriptions annually. The most prevalent sleep disorder is insomnia, affecting 10% to 20% of the adult population, with a higher prevalence in women, the elderly, and patients with psychiatric or other medical disorders. 9 An estimated 50 to 70 million Americans have some type of chronic sleep or wakefulness disorder, which may cause significant impairment of daytime functioning. Sleep disorders include issues with falling or staying asleep, waking up too early or too late, and problems with poor sleep quality. But if patients are spending enough time in bed and are still waking up tired, they may be suffering from a sleep disorder. Sleep insufficiency can be attributed to many societal factors such as work schedules, lifestyle, travel, and round-the-clock access to technology. 7 Decreasing sleep duration has become a public health concern for the first time, sleep has been included as a national health priority in Healthy People 2020. 6 A CDC analysis of 2006 data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System reported that an estimated 10% of adults reported insufficient rest or sleep for 14 or more days during a 30-day period. 4,5 Unfortunately, many are not reaching this target data collected from the National Health Interview Survey from 2008-2010 indicate that approximately 28% of adults in the United States get 6 hours or less of sleep. 2,3Īlthough there is no consensus of what constitutes enough sleep and individual needs will vary, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Sleep Foundation have recommended that most adults get 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night. 2 In addition, lack of sleep represents a major cause of reduced productivity, increased healthcare utilization, increased likelihood of injury, and an overall decreased quality of life. 1,2 Sleep deprivation can lead to an increased risk of hypertension, obesity, diabetes, depression, heart attack, and stroke. Sleep plays an important role in our health and well-being both the quality and quantity of sleep can have major impacts on a variety of health outcomes. The average person will spend one-third of his or her life sleeping. In a short time, she was recognized by other Studios like Mile High and Teem Skeet. However, as soon as the model is published to the Power BI Service and the data refreshes, the date times are no longer Pacific Time. This expression works great as long as users are in Power BI Desktop in Pacific Time. These clock changes are also known as “Spring forward” and “Fall back.”Ī simple PowerQuery expression can transform Coordinated Universal Time to any local time: DateTimeZone. Under DST, clocks are adjusted ahead one hour in the spring and one hour back in the fall. This would be an easy modification except for the time change that takes place twice a year in most of the US and various parts of the world, called Daylight Savings Time (DST). The accountants are in US Pacific Time (PT), and all events are held in Pacific Time, so it makes sense to convert UTC to PT. The client’s accounting team needs to report on and analyze ticket purchases. Also, the date and time that purchases are made for each event are recorded in UTC. The date and time of each event are recorded in UTC. Customers purchase tickets online or from agents at the event sites. We built an online event management and ticketing system for one of our clients. I also provide my solution for converting UTC to the Pacific Time Zone. Below I explain the problem with Power Query’s ToLocal() function in the Power BI Service in more detail. However, one has to be careful how and where they are used. However, Power Query lacks a good way to convert a Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) to a local time of your choosing while preserving Daylight Savings Time (DST). Time zone functions do exist. Additionally, the Power BI component Power Query provides a powerful and dynamic tool for loading and transforming data into Power BI’s data model. Power BI provides exceptional business analytic services. Update: Recent updates to the Power BI service need to be reviewed and appropriate updates to the post will be made.
